The costs nobody considers

This week I’ve written checks for more than $3000 for water.

Well, not water exactly. That is paid to the utility company for electricity to run the well, as well as the costs for maintaining my pumps and lines.

And not even the right to the water, which we have by right having been here for 130 years.

No, this $3000 is a combination of groundwater extraction fee and payments for environmental compliance related to being a discharger of water. (Water that falls on my property  from rain is considered my discharge.) In short, none of this money is for water… it’s just about water. These are the sort of expenses that farmers bear that nobody ever knows about.

In six months, it will be time to pay them again.
